saturday TRIAL DAY ONE (40) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. At 7PM, the trial will adjourn for the day. All players will be escorted by the robots into the cafeteria. From there, they're free to head into the lounge, the viewing deck, the chapel, or back to their rooms. All other areas of the ship have been locked off, and every player will be accompanied by a robot until they return to their room for the night. Any attempts to enter a locked off room or physically interfere with the trial or evidence outside of their room will cause the robot to raise a ship-wide alarm.

[Oh. Okay. That's...a thing that's happening. He's just going to lean back in his chair and stare at everybody else as he eyes the fact that he's on the suspect list.]

Kinda need to know the victim to actually kill her, don't you think? [So yeah this is bullshit.]

Not really. In fact, not knowing her would probably be easy for someone looking to kill, right? [ A shrug. ] Plus, we all had access to her skills even if we didn't know her personally.

"Trained martial artist" doesn't really tell us much though. If the killer was smart, they'd know what they were going up against instead of taking their chances and hoping they'd be a better fighter than she was. If you were looking to kill somebody wouldn't you wanna know what kind of person you're dealing with?

[antietam]

It might not have been premeditated. Assuming the murder weapon was her own key, it's possible the killer just got lucky. [ And then the other evidence... ] Plus, the use of medical items suggests they didn't entirely overpower her.

[chiseler]

True. [Unfortunately.] The serum's probably dissolved and stuff by now. We don't really have any idea how to tell who used the stuff do we?

You're joking, right? It'd probably be way easier for most people to kill someone they didn't know. Then they don't have to feel as guilty for turning on a friend or someone they've talked to enough to see as anything other than a means to their end. [Not him, but most people!!]

[chiseler]

Morally speaking, sure, but even then you pick somebody you know a little bit about. Murder's usually got an intent even if you wouldn't call the person a friend. [Not that...he has experience with that or anything.]

Also consider this. What if the killer killed her as a way to get at somebody else on this ship?

How would that even work? There are only a few sets of us from the same place, and I don't think she was one of 'em. Was she?

Yeah, but the intent in this case was getting that whole eluding your enemies deal. It didn't matter who died as long as someone bit it.

Uh...like who? I'm pretty sure most of us didn't even know her name.

I don't remember seeing her mingling around recently. The last time I saw her was just after I woke up, back in the first day.

I don't think anyone here really knew her. Maybe that's why she was picked as the target, because she was mostly unknown.

[chiseler]

We've only been here what, a week? A lot of us are pretty unknown to most people. [Keep digging that hole, Luke.] But someone had to and that someone wasn't me.

[bloodbiter]

I don't see why that's necessary at all. In fact, it might have been easier for the killer to convince themselves to murder someone they weren't familiar with.

[chiseler]

But you'd think a killer would still research what kind of person they were going up against before they decided to kill her. Wouldn't you?

[bloodbiter]

If they were intelligent, perhaps, which clearly this person wasn't. They were prepared to believe in the promises of those who kidnapped us and want us to murder each other.

[brooches]

I'm not saying you did this - [ She tries to give some clarity to her next statement. ] But how much research can a person do? Many of us are on the same ..."playing field" here. Our abilities limited and many of us isolated from loved ones.

[ A brief pause, pondering. ]

If someone was so desperate, logic may not be the first thing on their mind.

[muties]

Nah? Not unless it was personal beef. And we've all been here, like. A week, no one has personal beef with anyone yet, 'cept peeps from the same place.

[chiseler]

We still don't know if she was the only one from...wherever she was from. [A pause.] Personal beef's something to consider. Remind me what the motive was again?

[He could remember himself but why when he's trying to clear his own name?]

No, we don't. Be nice if we had like, a catalog or some shit. Uhhh, the motive was... [ shit she didn't pay attention to it ] Some bs about being... protected from your enemies? Something something Sun Tzu quote, I remember that. You got any of those-- enemies?

Yeah... I don't know her either, but I guess she kind of kept to herself. It might have been easy to get someone like that alone.

[chiseler]

The other question we've gotta consider is why the day care? She doesn't look like the type.

Maybe it's because the ballpit is a popular tourist attraction?

She could've been lured or led there by the killer. Although how would be the question, if that were the case.

[ Oh no, not his friend... It would be easier to do this if he didn't like some of these people already. ]

Actually, I don't remember seeing her around. I suppose someone could have looked at the profiles and gone after one of the people they hadn't met yet, but... [ He's not really buying it. ] And to be honest, I'm not too sure she was necessarily the real victim here.

[Allen. Amigo. You believe him right? There's a sound of interest though at that last point.]

What makes you think she's not the real victim?

I've been listening to all the discussion about her key. And, well, it isn't at all obvious that it's also a knife, is it? So whoever stabbed her with it wouldn't have known it was one unless Miss Yew had it out first. But... why? Why did she have it out?
