WEEK 1 - Trial

the pygmalion. . .

ONLINE

CAPTAIN'S LOG:
WEEK (1)

saturday TRIAL DAY ONE

(40) survivors

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. At 7PM, the trial will adjourn for the day. All players will be escorted by the robots into the cafeteria. From there, they're free to head into the lounge, the viewing deck, the chapel, or back to their rooms. All other areas of the ship have been locked off, and every player will be accompanied by a robot until they return to their room for the night. Any attempts to enter a locked off room or physically interfere with the trial or evidence outside of their room will cause the robot to raise a ship-wide alarm.

[He didn't get a chance to inspect the body yesterday, but he'll also leave that to the professionals. Instead, something else is on his mind.]

Well. It seems to me the sooner we solve this little mystery, the sooner we can put this sorry display behind us.

I wouldn't call myself an expert on the mystery novel genre, but wouldn't one typically start with a murder weapon?

...It would likely have been something sharp -- a knife, shortsword, or a dagger that could allow the perpetrator to strike quickly and fatally.

{ What is investigative discussions. }

Seeing as the victim had no weapon of her own, being up against someone who was skilled with that would have put her in an immediate disadvantage. The killer could, if they were careful, skilled, and quick enough, successfully strike at her without even being hit if she tried to retaliate.

We've figured out the place of the murder... so yes, I believe weapon and motive fall closely behind.

[ 1900s Nancy Drew? Nah, just lots of time to read in her tower. She's unsettled by the entirety of the situation, but she pushes her feelings aside for logic. ]

The autopsy indicates stab wounds - so a knife - um... shears of some kind?

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-06-11 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
She was stabbed, yeah? So...a blade?

[yes thank you judar fucking useful as always]
tacklefordwhimsy: These wounds are part of the job (I'm a pro at journalism)

[personal profile] tacklefordwhimsy 2016-06-11 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[Shelley reads the autopsy report a couple times]

I also note that the wounds seem to have been on the front of the body. It is possible the victim saw the killer's murderous intention and didn't have enough time to defend herself. Stabbing once would be all the killer needed to weaken Calypso enough to strike again.

My brother and I found this weird key in the kitchen, in a cabinet behind some mugs... The handle unfolded into a knife.

[ while minako doesn't have much experience in actively solving murders, she's quite the observant leader. there's a time and a place to be chipper, but right now is the time to be serious. there's something that she wants to bring up to the group. ]

I think we should talk about the victim, too. It has all of our "skills" listed on the datapad, right?

[ she pulls calisto's card on the datapad she brought, as proof. ]

It says here that she was trained in martial arts, but I don't think it looks like she really tried to defend herself. Isn't that kind of weird? And what was she doing in the daycare, anyway?

Yes, she certainly was stabbed by something sharp. [Thanks for the input.] I'm afraid my knowledge of blades isn't sufficient to know whether they were skilled. But the real question is, what was she stabbed with.

What occurs to me is that three out of five of our suspects have some sort of bladed weapon with them. Not that I propose one of these must have been the murder weapon; that seems a little too easy for this type of mystery. But access to weapons is a factor we must consider.
parodeity: (LORD 🎧 what a day)

[personal profile] parodeity 2016-06-11 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be the victim's item. She had "Yatagarasu's key" or whatever. Isn't that some crow thing?

I...W-What? [ That's about all Kazuma can manage at the moment after seeing himself as a suspect.]
tacklefordwhimsy: Otherwise we're screwed (Let's hope for a deal)

[personal profile] tacklefordwhimsy 2016-06-11 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Huh. That weird key that is in the display case, it seems]

Any chance it may have been the murder weapon and got cleaned afterwards? I don't know if it'd fit the wounds...I didn't see the body.
tevinteriscoming: (concerned. 6)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-06-11 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
...Yes. That was about where my thinking was at. It was certainly something sharp.

We can always compare the wounds to all the sharp shit we have. That's detective-y, yeah? At the very least we could like, rule something out maybe.
douchemag: (whatever)

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-06-11 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So we just have to find whoever had something sharp on them, right? Easy~. Can I go back to bed now?

daycare (ballpit) findings

[personal profile] brooches 2016-06-11 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Balls from the ballpit.
Some are deflated as if they were sat upon while others are splattered with blood.
Also, the ballpit was punctured, only slightly but enough to let the air spill out.

[ This is typed up for the bloody / crushed balls. Good job, Elizabeth! ]
socloverit: (the hitmen always find you)

[personal profile] socloverit 2016-06-11 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It could be. That'd explain why it's in the kitchen of all places, and why it was kind of hidden, right?
tevinteriscoming: (serious. 7)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-06-11 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, but would it? It seems out victim was a trained martial artist. I've no idea what that entails, but shouldn't she have had some ability to defend herself from attack?
douchemag: (eh?)

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-06-11 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The victim was a crow?

[wow suddenly this case got a lot more interesting!! (no.)]
