WEEK 1 - Trial

the pygmalion. . .

ONLINE

CAPTAIN'S LOG:
WEEK (1)

saturday TRIAL DAY ONE

(40) survivors

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. At 7PM, the trial will adjourn for the day. All players will be escorted by the robots into the cafeteria. From there, they're free to head into the lounge, the viewing deck, the chapel, or back to their rooms. All other areas of the ship have been locked off, and every player will be accompanied by a robot until they return to their room for the night. Any attempts to enter a locked off room or physically interfere with the trial or evidence outside of their room will cause the robot to raise a ship-wide alarm.

If we don't, then we can't linger on that. All we can do is try to figure out what type of person the use of the serum suggests.

I guess someone who spent some time in the medbay, considering a lot of us didn't know how that stuff worked.

The serum's only usable for light wounds so we can guess it was used by somebody who could easily overpower our victim here even if she got in a few hits. There've been a couple of people who've spent time in the medbay that aren't on that suspect list, including Clover. That's how I first met her.

The thing comes with instructions too. Maybe somebody got somebody else to swipe it for them.

You think someone might be covering up for them? [ He glances at the suspect list. ] I don't think any of them knew each other beforehand, right?
chiseler: (ain't it strange?)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's quiet for a second because, uh, he's met two people on that suspect list and he's not sure admitting it would actually help him. So he shrugs instead.] That's also assuming that any accomplice is actually listed up there. Who says they would have been caught?

[personal profile] thatbites 2016-06-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Murdering someone because an AI told you to is dumb enough but do you really think two people were also dumb enough to trust a stranger to murder someone together? We've only been here for a week.

[That scenario is just exponentially more stupid.]
chiseler: (gonna seize the day)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe if those two people are dumb enough to trust people so easily. We've got some of those type around. [Emily don't call his outlandish suspicions dumb, gosh.]

[personal profile] thatbites 2016-06-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but they sure aren't up there on that list.

[Except for maybe the kid? She hasn't actually talked a lot with everyone up there but... whatever!]
chiseler: (ain't it beautiful? so unusual)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Like I said to Adam there's always a loophole. [And at the risk of shooting himself in the foot, here's an example.] Let's pretend you've met somebody and you actually kind of like 'em a bit. Admire them, maybe. Whatever. Now pretend that person asks you to do something and because you want to help this person since we're all supposed to be in this together, you do it. You get tricked into helping carry out a crime, but it's only a smaller piece in a larger plan so you get off without consequence and somebody else gets pegged instead. Doesn't change that you were still involved and you still have that information, but you're not willing to spill in order to protect the person you helped.

Make sense?

[ He more meant that none of them came from the same place, but that is a good point. ] The rules do say that anyone connected to the murder will be up there, but if it's something small like that, who knows?
chiseler: (dominated by passerbys)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
There's always loopholes to everything. I wouldn't rule it out yet.
antietam: (pic#10332796)

[personal profile] antietam 2016-06-11 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd think they'd make it this more straightforward. But I guess that's not fun to watch.
chiseler: (and if you can't get what you want)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If it was more straightforward, the motives probably wouldn't be that specific either. We should check if there're any more loopholes.

Well, the time of death is kind of weird. Apparently the body wasn't cold despite a five hour or longer gap?
chiseler: (with a thousand lies and a good disguise)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
...what if the killer tried using the serum to seal the wounds and it held up for a little bit before it bled through? Could explain why it was completely drained and cold. Maybe they didn't use it on themselves at all.
antietam: (pic#10332796)

[personal profile] antietam 2016-06-11 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if that would work to preserve a body temporarily. [ Not like they can test it but. ] It's a possibility. But why? To make us think she had only just died?

I guess that would lay the blame more toward someone like Jessie, who found the body.
chiseler: (living a cliche)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Think that's your answer right there. I don't think it's out there to think somebody who went out of their way to hide the weapon would also go out of their way to try and lay the blame on somebody else.
toprotecttheworld: (12)

[personal profile] toprotecttheworld 2016-06-12 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Except that wouldn't work, you morons.

[And here's a giddy Jessie after investigating the medical gel one more time.]

Only a fingertip's worth was used. Look at how little was taken for yourself, compare the jars. Whatever's being covered up isn't large at all.
antietam: (Default)

[personal profile] antietam 2016-06-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
[ there's NO NEED FOR NAMES JESSIE. ]

I see. So then it's not necessarily someone who would have had a hard time fighting the victim.
bloodbiter: (son of a donkey's dildo)

[personal profile] bloodbiter 2016-06-12 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
If they didn't use the serum to make it seem like her time of death was later... Can you think of any other way the body wouldn't be cold after so long?
toprotecttheworld: (10)

[personal profile] toprotecttheworld 2016-06-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it takes a while for a body to reach room temperature? I don't think there's ventilation in the daycare, it's always so dusty.
