WEEK 1 - Trial

the pygmalion. . .

ONLINE

CAPTAIN'S LOG:
WEEK (1)

saturday TRIAL DAY ONE

(40) survivors

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. At 7PM, the trial will adjourn for the day. All players will be escorted by the robots into the cafeteria. From there, they're free to head into the lounge, the viewing deck, the chapel, or back to their rooms. All other areas of the ship have been locked off, and every player will be accompanied by a robot until they return to their room for the night. Any attempts to enter a locked off room or physically interfere with the trial or evidence outside of their room will cause the robot to raise a ship-wide alarm.

The other question we've gotta consider is why the day care? She doesn't look like the type.
booklore: grinning (♪ like a dark horse)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because the ballpit is a popular tourist attraction?
chiseler: (you're gonna go far kid)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[...buddy.]

Maybe. But wouldn't that mean finding the body a lot faster and easier if it's so popular? Why not take the body somewhere else?
booklore: just did something bad and knows it (♪ ready for)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but is that a bad thing? We would find a body no matter where it was. [ There aren't that many hiding spots here, after all. ]

And moving it would probably be more dangerous than leaving it.
chiseler: (man I never had a chance)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Moving it would probably be more dangerous but why not bury the body in the ball pit instead of flipping over the merry-go-round? That's just getting fingerprints over even more items and leaving behind more evidence.
booklore: sweatin, thinking, weighing options, hand on bandana, "oh boy" (♪ are you ready for)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because the ballpit was deflated, and the merry-go-round could have been flipped over while Calisto Yew and the perpetrator were fighting.

Plus, has anyone here even tried looking for or taking fingerprints...?
chiseler: (see them running for their lives)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Did not think of that...]

Dunno. Do we even have anybody who knows how to do that kind of stuff here?
booklore: inspecting a bottle, curious (♪ this love will make you levitate)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
No one's profile mentions it specifically, then again I don't think the profiles are very complete. Why not ask everyone else about it?

Or we could ask Al.
chiseler: (and now someone is gonna pay)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The profiles are definitely incomplete. [Which is both a good and bad thing.] See if we can get somebody to ask AI. Probably would look pretty suspicious if a suspect started asking.
booklore: talking, smiling (♪ you should know)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh? I don't think it's very suspicious. Wouldn't it look more like you're invested in finding the real culprit and proving your innocence?

If you're set on not asking though, I can bring it up.
chiseler: (there's something in your way)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't need to look too invested to prove my innocence. [A beat.] Also the AI creeps me out a little. [No thanks.]
booklore: staring, thinking, hand/fingers curled at chin (♪ once you're mine)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
She does? [ Huh. ]

Can someone that pretty be creepy?
chiseler: (is your silhouette fading out?)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, you'd be surprised. [Let's not regale in the tales of Aphrodite...] You trust her to be truthful anyway?
booklore: smiling, probably up to no good (♪ like a bird)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I trust her to be as truthful as her programming allows.
chiseler: (breaking in a sweat)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[...how does programming work, we just don't know.]

Then let's see what she says.
Edited (always) 2016-06-11 22:15 (UTC)
booklore: reacting, ‾-‾, i dont know how to describe this (♪ but down to earth)

[personal profile] booklore 2016-06-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[ And then Lavi went off or something and came back and programming still doesn't make sense. ]

Ah. It looks like none of the robots know how to do it. Oh well, it wouldn't have helped if the killer were wearing gloves anyway.
chiseler: (bottle rockets and celebrate)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[He rotates his hands in a jazzhands sort of motion.] I didn't even think of gloves. Nice catch. Guess we're gonna have to rule out the fingerprinting for now then.
thanatosincarnate: (> Is fate predetermined?)

[personal profile] thanatosincarnate 2016-06-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
She could've been lured or led there by the killer. Although how would be the question, if that were the case.
chiseler: (see them running for their lives)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Goes right back to it had to be someone she knew. Who would be dumb enough to follow a stranger when we all know what the goal is?
thanatosincarnate: (> the eternal crimson moon)

[personal profile] thanatosincarnate 2016-06-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
People are more idiotic than they appear.

{ He's seen his fair share of cadets who suddenly wandered off, ignored orders, and got killed. }

On the other hand, if someone else did happen to speak to her in private even before this, they could simply lie about not being acquainted with her in the first place.

{ Because honestly, he thought the same as Luke -- that it could be someone she knew or even was vaguely acquainted with. }
chiseler: (dominated by passerbys)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Also true. [To both of those. They can't keep track of who spoke to people on this ship.] Would any of the suspects be threatened by a defense attorney?
thanatosincarnate: (> shadows brought into light)

[personal profile] thanatosincarnate 2016-06-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not immediately.

{ ... }

If, like what had been mentioned earlier, that woman had started the fight first with her hidden blade, she may have attempted to take her murderer by surprise. Which wouldn't have ended well for her.

She knows martial arts, but some of the suspects listed are more skilled than she was in combat. She could have been easily overtaken, whether the killer felt threatened or not.

chiseler: (hit 'em right between the eyes)

[personal profile] chiseler 2016-06-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So you think it could be a murder attempt gone wrong and the murderer became the victim. [Matches up with the idea that Allen started to suggest.] That key wouldn't look suspicious at all if you didn't know it was hiding a blade. She doesn't look that threatening either.

[So yeah. He can easily see that happening.]
