[so this week, Grell's been spending quite a bit of time here. ordinarily she'd be seeing what she could find, but these days she's deliberately hunting down a specific type of book - medical texts. the scientists may be all down, and there may be a few people who know first aid, but if something happens again, they need as many people to be knowledgeable as possible.
so she reads, or she's going through the shelves with a focused look, most of her time spent with the former. she'll never be a formal doctor, but if she can assist again, it might be all worthwhile.]
late nights.
[of course, even the bloodbath of last week isn't enough for Grell to be fixing her sleep schedule. if anything, being up during hours people should be asleep is the time when she's actually the most relaxed. for the most part she haunts the viewport, but a day or two passes by when she's in the parlor instead. what occupies her is one of two things - either continuing on the abstract embroidering she's been doing, or setting pen to paper and writing in the notebook she carries.
she's awake, and quite attentive to the small sounds of the ship itself, as well as those of other people coming closer, at which point she'll look up to figure out who it is at the least. and the doors being left open? deliberately to show she isn't plotting anything. some might call that making yourself vulnerable - she considers it leaving open an escape route.]
wildcard.
[for other shenanigans.]

He doesn't see which, deciding to lean against a wall, and close his eyes for a bit. }
What kind of text caught your eye -- and for what reason?

[her eyes glance up to see Arumat's familiar form before she looks back down to the paragraph she was at.]
In a single week we've lost a section of those we could trust to deal with injuries beyond the norm and crisis situations, and we had three people injured gravely directly following. Letting that remain the state of affairs...it's unthinkable. I might not be classically trained, but I can devote some time to picking up useful information and theory.
[and it keeps her mind off this motive. the one that had led her to throw her datapad into the wall when she saw it.]

{ He'll be getting comfortable right about here, and even sit down, because why not? He's nearby someone he is familiar with. }
If you want, we can even probably create some sort of faux scenario and I can quiz you on the knowledge you picked up from medical text. I am familiar on dealing with medical procedures pertaining to fixing up an individual's injury.
{ He saved Machias after all using his first aid knowledge. It wasn't anything to scoff at. }

[she sounds surprised when he suggests it - and she is, to think he'd do that, in a good way.]
Far better than waiting for something to happen and having my first test of memory being then. And if you have advice, I'd be happy to listen and learn.
no subject
Exactly. Hm, before offering general advice, let's go through with an easy scenario.
{ He seems to think here for a moment... }
First, let's talk about a possibility in which someone has had their arm cut off. What's the first thing you'll want to do to save that person's life?

[the answer comes easily.]
One would apply a tourniquet near to the area to stem the flow as quickly as possible.

late nights - viewport, tuesday
Ah. Forgive me if I'm interrupting, there are so few places to get some peace and quiet.
no subject
[lowering the notebook in her hands, she gives him a brief. if slightly tired looking smile.]
And quiet can be provided, if that's your wish.
wednesday night, viewport
I wasn't aware you embroidered. What are you working on?

[pausing in her stitching, she spreads out the cloth to show Adelina how the form of some flourishes and curves are coming along. when one color of thread ends, she's moved to another, blending the stitches instead with what color she's chosen.]
I didn't exactly have a plan when I started - but there's something calming in the work of it. Making something, having to focus to ensure the stitches are right. You had a good idea, to ask her for the supplies, and for that I thank you.
no subject
It isn't the kind of design I am used to see it, but I like it all the same. No thanks are necessary, however. How did you decide on the colors? Whatever struck your fancy, I assume?
no subject
[and as it so happens, the beautiful colors are a deep red, rose pink, violet, and a golden yellow.]
If I really had a plan for it, I'd try to make them match, but for now, I think I'd just like the color. The design of this entire ship practically longs for it in the midst of all this white.
[she shrugs after admitting that truth.]
It's why I treasure the garden so much. Some actual beauty amidst this place's melancholy horror.
[and privately, she thinks the two complement each other, but she holds her tongue on that. if she's to die on this ship, she prays her killer knows enough to make it lovely.]

What are you looking for? The system is a little confusing, but I think I know where to find some things.
no subject
I'm looking for where the books on medicine might be hiding. Anatomy, instructions for giving out first aid, things like that.
no subject
Oh, uh, I think there was... [ He steps away to try to find that book he was reading. ] I guess we've lost just about everyone who might know about that, haven't we? Do you think that was on purpose?
no subject
[inwardly, she still thinks that at least one of those deaths could have been prevented, but there was no undoing it.]
no subject
This is on anatomy. I wanted to know the best ways to examine corpses, but it didn't tell me too much. [ He shrugs and hands it to her. ] You want to be our next doctor?
no subject
[but if her expression says anything, she definitely daydreamed about it for a second there.]

I don't think that's how reading works. [Hi Grell.]
no subject
[hi Luke. she turns to look at him, and the slight smile on her lips says it all.]
Look at just the right angle into the spine, and suddenly you can see it all.

[but she'll let that joke drop for now.]
I'm hoping this one will contain information on practicing first aid, because this week I decided to pick up a new hobby. What do you think?
[would she make a cute nurse?]

[if books could tell her how to set a dislocated shoulder, how to deal with a broken leg, how to know when stitches needed to come out, it would be enough to get by.]
