saturday TRIAL DAY TWO (29) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

[There's a spark of irritation if only because - ] While I understand your suspicion, I hope that you're preparing your theory once it's clear that I'm telling the truth.

Arumat questioned me as for my motive - my worst nightmare, was it? It would be failing someone important to me. That includes disappointing him.

And for the record, he would be incredibly disappointed if I killed a friend.

It would also be remiss to discount you as a suspect for emotional reasons, would it not? Everyone agrees we can't act as though Elizabeth is innocent.

And if I am satisfied you're telling the truth, my theory is that there was a very limited frame of time in which our killer could have acted.

You're correct, however the motive does nothing for me since targeting Light would very well make my nightmare come true.

I surmised similarly with Luke. It would also require someone to realize that Hancock was not killed by the poison and thus resort to targeting Light and Clover instead.

So, then, you've a suspicion.

I've only gotten so far as to rule out Elizabeth and Clover - and myself, of course, though I don't expect you to believe that so easily.

However Jack and Fumi's alibis for the morning were simply that they were sleeping, weren't they? Or in Fumi's case, two hours for cube investigation and tea. While I do believe it's possible for me to not have crossed paths with her while I was preparing breakfast for Harold, that is still a sizable chunk of time where the medical bay was left unattended and the two are unaccounted for.

And why have you ruled out Elizabeth?

I wouldn't think that such an emotional girl would have it in her to leave an active turret in the medical bay when it would be capable of mowing down and stealing lives indiscriminately.

I can't see that either. It's far too cruel a method. Maybe I'm being foolish, and I don't harbor any beliefs that any of us are too good-hearted to ever commit murder, but not like this.

[unasking]

[A brief laugh.]

Rather than foolish, doesn't that just mean you have some faith in the people onboard?

[That said, he'll be shaking his head.]

Though I believe some people would be capable of it here - at the very least if it's certain that their important people aren't inside the medical bay when the turret goes off.

Perhaps you already know this, but I should probably mention Frankenstein was with me when we tended to Clover's injuries.

And he was clearly familiar enough with both Light and Clover, if that as well as what I came across in his room indicate anything. I don't mean to dismiss your theory entirely, but I'm having difficulty seeing why he'd deliberately target either of them.

And I have difficulty seeing why anyone would set up a turret that would indiscriminately kill whoever entered the medical bay.

I don't have any intention of making him take a fall. But there must be a different reason to defend him with than his emotional ties to the victims.

... I know. We need to consider all angles, even the ones we're not comfortable with pursuing.

It just seems... rather callous to target both the Fields like that and come back to the scene of the crime to treat the survivor. They would have had to target Light in advance in order to get the turret and if the traces of poison ivy on his handprint scanner indicates anything. ... I don't know. Are we absolutely sure both of them were planned at the last minute?
