saturday TRIAL DAY TWO

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

I mentioned this yesterday for a different reason, but... The killer going in against Arumat with only a wire and possibly doing everything around the room themselves might mean they didn't expect a fight. ...Or at least not a physical one.

But how could he have been killed so easily? We don't have evidence of poisoning.

He's got a magic limit, doesn't he? There's no way he'd have enough strength left to strangle the guy after blowing his load stunning him, not to mention bashing his head in!

If he's like the mages I know back home? Hell yeah. [he won't mention how he's the exception becasue TIME...] Most of us aren't even that physically strong to begin with - not really a lot of reason to train that up if you mostly fight at a distance and have barriers.

... But then wouldn't it depend on how much magic it would take to just stun someone unprepared?

As far as I know? It would depend on how high level the spell was. But something that could keep a physical combatant like Arumat too paralyzed to fight back long enough to strangle him? I can't imagine that'd only take a little power. He'd need to be able to keep the guy down for a while, not just make him stumble a bit.

If they attacked Arumat at an hour where everyone is expected to be asleep, going in with only a syringe and a wire is pretty weird. Either they thought they could get the jump on him, or they were overconfident for some reason.

[Either way, he's grimacing. They have 20 minutes left to vote and they don't know shit.]

I checked Arumat's wrist again, by the way. It looks like it was yanked until it broke. Dunno what that could mean, but...

[They're going to scapegoat someone again at this rate.]

... Maybe whoever did it wasn't super strong and they were trying to drag him around by the wrist and ended up breaking it?

Wouldn't yanking a wrist broken indicate bein' stronger rather than weaker, though?

I don't know. I've never broken a bone, but... the usual motion for breaking a wrist is like this, right? [he grabs his other wrist and bends it at an angle to show] Just yanking implies they must've been trying to drag dead weight by a bone that isn't exactly made for that. Why would you drag someone by the wrist if you were strong enough to lift them up?

...Oh, yeah, ok, post-mortem break, ignore me. But why were they draggin' the body around at all?

To place him? I don't know. I can't see how else they'd have broken the wrist by just yanking on it than if they were dragging around a corpse.

You can only get into the bathrooms with the room owner's handprint. So that probably means...

But they had the suit, didn't they? They knew Arumat had fire magic, so why else would they have brought it if they weren't ready to get burnt?

Isn't it unlikely they were wearing it? His scythe cut through the suit like it was butter. Even if they were wearing it, how suspicious would that be at 9 o'clock? Anyone could have been walking around and spotted them in that gear. No one's asleep at that hour.
