saturday TRIAL DAY TWO (22) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

[The more they discus the evidence the more this bothers him, so time to bring this up.]

Given our record of not walking in on shady activity, I don't expect much of an answer. But does anyone recall seeing Arumat late on Thursday? Say... around the time we think the shower might have gotten damaged. Anywhere from 8PM to 9PM.

[He doesn't recall seeing anything personally, so.]

Any time before that works, too. Maybe 6PM or 7PM on Thursday. Someone must have seen him before he headed to his room, assuming he was murdered there.

I, er, I'm pretty sure I saw Monsieur Arumat heading to his room about 8 PM...

Are you certain? Was he followed back to his room, perhaps?

I saw him by himself, so it's possible. Or--- what Judar is saying, and the killer was already waiting for him.

But there's the archives. Perhaps they tried to spring a trap there, but failed - so followed him to his room instead?

It's possible. He was walking quickly when I saw him.....

It makes sense, doesn't it? A killer stalks him in the archives, something goes wrong, and then they must follow him to his room to complete their plan?

It might explain all the clues, if an earlier plan was foiled.

That's true. But how did no one notice someone following him to his room?

Unless they were already waiting for him, and the trap triggered on its own.

...hey, we think the killer probably had the room key, right? What if they just - I dunno, hid under the bed or something and waited for Arumat to come in so they could ambush him?

'Course, that doesn't explain where the archives come in at all.

If they used the room key..... that may be why it was melted.

Or maybe, the archives was the real scene of the crime, and the killer moved his body to his room and destroyed the room themselves to stage a new crime scene?

At eight? Everyone was still awake then, I don't think there's any way they could have gotten his body up there without anyone noticing unless the killer had the invisibility cloak or used the vents. And before you ask, I am not shoving a corpse through the vents to see how long it would take!

Maybe not. But we still don't know how the killer was able to get the fireproof suit in and out....

Monsieur Dorian suggested it could have been a trap in the archives that didn't work, or something that spooked him into going back to his room....

[Shrugging.] Yeah, no clue about that one. Probably easier to hide than a freaking body, though.

What, and he didn't bother warning anyone else? There were other people on the vulnerable list too, you know! [GRUMBLING GRUMBLING okay but Judar you barely talked to the guy and honestly would be doing the world a favor if you got offed so shut up]

It sounds absurd, but on the other hand...

[How do you nicely say it was Arumat.]

I once saw him taking a nap in the archives mid-week. He was a very confident and independent man.

... I spoke with him around 6PM.

[ as much as this might help this also has the drawback of making his expression falter a little. ]

For how long? And where?

In my room. We spoke for about an hour before he had to leave, but... I didn't ask him where he was going.

[ he glances aside for a moment ]

If I'd have known...

Well, there was an hour between that and going to his room... [ He pauses. ]

It's not your fault, Machias. He thought he could do it by himself.

[breakshot]

I-- I know that. And I know Arumat wouldn't have gone down without a fight, but.

[ that doesn't make it any easier to accept. maybe things really would have been different if he'd just offered to go with him that one time. he wasn't thinking. ]

I really don't know where he went after that. ... I should have asked, just... I could have went with him.

If Marinette saw him, he was probably fine until he got to his room. And he was adamant against not having a partner, so... I don't think there's much more you could have done.

I know. I know that. ... He's probably calling me an idiot right about now, that bastard.

[ adam. first the guns, now this. why are you always right. ]

I guess we really should start partnering up after this, shouldn't we?

He just came in to see how I was doing. I'd been trying to get more rest since, well... what happened the week before.

[ It's probably saying something that Machias doesn't immediately try to escape the contact, just looking away. He pats close to his knee area, indicating the place where it'd been stabbed. ]

I can't remember if Arumat said anything that stood out. He seemed the same as always, right up until he had to leave.

How is your knee doing, by the way...? [Leaves her hand there for a few seconds]

Did he seem to be in a hurry?
