[Frankenstein has gone so very, very, very many years without being hugged. Physical contact is used sparingly for him, often in the most barest of ways, and yet when Adrien hugs him, his arms move automatically to return it. The action surprises him when he realizes, as if he'd forgotten that this was a part of humanity that he's capable of.

Yet he just allows his expression to soften when Adrien's voice breaks and he will bend down to give him a proper hug rather than just letting Adrien cling to him. If he could, he would protect this child from having to be present when he knows that he'll have to meet his end.]

That is enough for me.

[A lifetime of hearing the exact opposite - Kill the monster! and Frankenstein must die! - seems both so far away and yet so close as he knows that he will have to say goodbye.]

Your strength is needed by others, Adrien. I can't accept it.

[He's not letting go yet, just relishing in the hug while he can. He does stop his face to chest mashing, looking up at Frankenstein. He's never gotten to say goodbye to anyone, and faced with an impending one, he doesn't know what to say, or even how to say it. This didn't have to happen. This shouldn't have to happen.]

I'm sorry. I should've-- I could've-- [helped? he can't help anyone. he hasn't yet. what kind of superhero is he, anyway, if he can't even stop this?] You don't deserve this. I... you have to know that.

[It's automatic - he reaches into his pocket to procure a handkerchief and immediately sets about wiping Adrien's tears with it. Frankenstein might not consider himself meant to parent - he probably really isn't qualified - however there are certainly moments where he can almost be doting.

Or is it because these are his last moments?

His expression grows rueful at that, fondly exasperated.

He won't regale Adrien with his past now, with why in a way, he most certainly deserves this. It may in fact very longer overdue.]

And you have to know that this isn't your fault. None of this is your fault.

You did everything you could for me. I know that. I'm grateful.

[just like Frankenstein, Adrien won't argue with that assessment, though the look on his face gives him away. What has he done to help him in any way? Even now, the man is about to die and he's comforting Adrien. The thought alone nearly gets him to step away, but his hold just loosens a bit. He doesn't want to let go.]

I'll stop this. [it's said with a desperate edge to it, but he doesn't mean the execution] This-- project, this game, I swear I'll put a stop to it. I'll do everything I can.
