[Yes, he knows what this type of speech is. Honor me by picking up where I've left off, take on my responsibilities. Obviously that's the response he ought to have. But he isn't going to lie to a man on his death bed, particularly not when he owes him something.]

I wouldn't flatter myself to think I could take your place. You've plainly made your mark, particularly on the children.

[That's simply not the type of person he is. He can't promise to take responsibility when he's never been responsible.]

On the contrary, the idea of filling my shoes is the very opposite of flattery. There is nothing beneficial about going down the same road as me unless you're interested in a lifetime of difficulty.

Regardless, you're older than them, are you not?

[sure you shot an 8 year old in an alternate timeline but]

I expect you to ensure that they survive, if nothing else.

I've always been good at getting myself into lifetime difficulties, I suppose.

[No, that's the thing. He cares, he does, and he actually admires Frankenstein for all he's done for the younger ones here, and all he's done to make this environment a better place. They've barely spoken, but he has respect for him. And that respect is why he can't just answer him with platitudes. He can't tell him he'll ensure the younger ones survive or even that he'll attempt to act in a less than selfish way if he doesn't know that he means it absolutely. Right this moment, he could mean it, but then he's always been the type to run away when things get difficult. If he promises anything now, whatever his best intentions, the moment it becomes hard he'll disappear into drinking, withdraw from the people he cares about, and utterly fail, as he always has before when faced with similar choices. And he has too much respect for the efforts Frankenstein has shown to make promises he won't live up to.

But he sighs.]

I will do what I can. You have my word on that must, at the least.

[There's a moment where it's almost uncertain whether Frankenstein thinks that's enough - however given the fact that Dorian did try to have faith in him for a time, he eventually acquiesces with a nod. In truth, Frankenstein doesn't know how much he's done in regards to the children or what he's done for the people here. He's never seen himself as the giving type.]

And I will hold you to it.

[A promise, not a threat. Regardless he supposes - this is the last time he'll speak with Dorian.]

... I accept your apology.

Like I said, don't be too hard on yourself. You are not the first to be nervous about what I am capable of and make assumptions from there.

Thank you.

[He's grateful, actually. He doesn't know how honest Frankenstein is being, but he would like to think he genuinely accepts it. The harshness he's been treated with helps; there's nothing he hates more than being treated more kindly than he deserves by someone he's wronged.]

The truth is, I believed you. Before the fingerprints, obviously. I didn't think you would have killed your friend.
