saturday TRIAL DAY ONE (34) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

I mean, sure, that's a hell of a way to go, but, uh, I was thinking something simpler. Just one shot, right between the eyes. Nice and quick.

And then what happens to the body? Burial, or giving it to Lady Alice?

I'm betting Al could figure it out. I mean, the rest of the bodies go—

[ He waves his hand vaguely, just sort of referring to a "somewhere," since he doesn't know. ]

Don't see why one more would be a problem. It's in the book.

If you try to kill Machias by publically executing him, I can guarantee you'll regret it.

[ Jack just laughs, and quite literally waves this off with a dismissive flip of his hand. ]

Yeaaaah, don't think I would, cupcake. But, you know? Points for threatening me, at least.

It's a better end than how the killers usually go when we vote for them. Those executions take way too long and seem pretty damn personal.

I'm just saying, we could all pretend to be good members of modern society and just throw bad guys into jail and then no one has to deal with any weird revenge killing cycles out of shitty period dramas or anything.

I mean, if we're going with the "one idiot decided to murder but someone else finished the job for him" theory? Nah, not really. I mean, cool motive, but still murder either way.

That's kinda what I'm saying, though. Just because the mob decides to kill somebody, why is that okay when some rando doing it isn't?

Or have any of the weirdly personal bullshit either. My method? Way simpler. Nothing to hide or to fuck with someone.

What precisely do you think that would solve?

Getting rid of murderers? Obviously?

[ He laughs, but it comes with a pretty casual shrug. ]

I mean, no matter how you cut it, if this theory is true? We've got one guy who actually killed someone, and we have someone that was really trying for it. Considering we can only get rid of one the "official" way, I'm not exactly happy with the idea of just letting the other one go free because we can only vote for one.

If this theory is true, one of them was trying to protect themselves and their friend from a killer and made a tragic mistake. If it were you, would you simply step aside after someone tried to kill you and shot your close friend?

Make no mistake. If you attempt to escalate this situation any further, I will stop you.

[ He crosses his arms, but that last part does get his expression to shift to a pretty challenging smile. ]

If it were me? If it were me, I wouldn't be pretending otherwise, kiddo. If this Lavi kid did this, then he knows damn well exactly what happened. He's trying to get someone else to take the fall for him. Doesn't that strike you as being pretty bad? Because, hell, I sure do. You explain the whole thing day one, and at that point, I think we would have all had no problem just voting for our "real" culprit here. But this?

[ He gestures to the table ]

This makes it a problem. 'Cause what if someone that has nothing to do with it takes the fall? Doesn't exactly have you coming out smellin' like roses.

[ Jack leans back in his chair comfortably once he's made his point. ]

But, hey, don't worry about it. I'll shoot someone in the face if it's necessary, but I'm also not looking to become enemy number one here just because I think it's the obvious thing to do. But if more people agree with me? I'm gonna do what's necessary.
