WEEK 9 - Trial Day Two

the pygmalion. . .

ONLINE

CAPTAIN'S LOG:
WEEK (9)

saturday TRIAL DAY ONE

(19) survivors

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

Jessie... [ Why u so wise. Elizabeth is thoughtfully chewing on her words. ] How long would it take for a body pushed into the zero g room to reach the top and detonate the mine? Those boys should have tested that, right?

They should have. The first explosion happened only about thirty minutes after I'd been sent upstairs, but the second test happened after a much longer wait. At first, I thought they were goofing off, but maybe if they found something else now might be the time to share it.

[Hello. Did someone say boys??]

We tied a dummy to the scarf the second time around. It took a while for the dummy to become untied and float all the way up to the ceiling, where the mine was. [A pause.] When we opened the door to check the results, one end of the scarf was flapping around upwards. Just like Clover, you and me found it.

Around thirty minutes. The first happened within three minutes, mind you.

[Summarized over here for convenience, too.]

Thirty minutes, which would mean we're looking at about 1:30 - 1:45 for when the killer was active. Adrien and myself returned upstairs a little before then without seeing anything amiss.

... I don't want to suggest this, believe me. But what if our killer knew nobody would be downstairs during that time?

I am. Marinette was flying solo for a while during patrols. She doesn't have an alibi during that time.

[He regrets everything. So much.]

[ Sorry, it's always so shocking to hear. Maybe this is what everyone thought when Elizabeth got suspected! ]

She's a child.

I know. But so are three of the other culprits. Jack's accounted for thanks to us. No matter how we slice it, a kid did it.

[This sucks. Why.]

[personal profile] monsieurchatastrophe 2016-08-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, and you shouldn't have. There's nothing here that points to her. We patrol every Thursday night, it's common knowledge.

[I'm sorry for who he chooses to be]

We need to consider every suspect, Adrien. "Common knowledge" doesn't mean shit in this place. Neither does free will.

[Chill, kitty cat. Chill.]

If Marinette is one of them, and I think it very unlikely at this point, but if she were, the only way to save her would be to prove it. We must be willing to theorize the worst.

[Raising an eyebrow.]

It isn't a bad point. We know what sort of killer we may be dealing with. Holding back on unpopular theories will do no one any good, least of all our suspects.

That said, it isn't quite so clear as that. Marinette and Adrien were switching accompanying me all night, but we never separated for long. I patrolled the lower deck with Marinette shortly before 1. She left me with Adrien briefly to check on Jack. Then, we went upstairs a little before 1:30. Marinette left me with Adrien to search at that time, yes, but we were all three of us on the middle deck for that half hour.

If we're suggesting Marinette slipped down to the lower deck during that time to kill two people, well, it would have been risky, to say the least.

It would have been to risky... for someone in their right mind. We know that isn't always the case.

[He doesn't want to point the finger at Marinette, though. Not really. So he'll continue with—]

How long was Marinette separated from the two of you? Couldn't have been long, if you're willing to vouch for her like this.
tevinteriscoming: (serious. 8)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-08-07 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
We were separated the entire time, about a half hour window. She was taking stock of the medical bay, and we were looking elsewhere. Theoretically, she could have gotten by. But that would have required her to know that Minako and Machias were downstairs.

[He's not really vouching for her, it just doesn't make that much sense to him.]

We've two theories here, yes? Botched accomplice, or bystander. I find it very hard to believe anyone approached Marinette, of all people, to be their accomplice. But for her to have been a bystander, she didn't only need to know the lower floor was empty. She'd need to know someone was down there, to make it worth stealing away.

["She'd need to know someone was down there" makes him think of something, actually. Arumat was seen walking around during the last trial, wasn't he?]

Kind of a long shot, but do you think anyone might have spotted Minako or Machias heading to the bottom deck? Maybe you. One of the kids. Anyone. Someone must have seen something.
tevinteriscoming: (complain. 2)

I should hope if I'd seen them, I'd have mentioned it by now.

[He didn't see either.]
missmaladroite: (Now you're lying close to me)

[personal profile] missmaladroite 2016-08-07 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If you're suggesting I'm an alien, the aliens were trying to get away with murder just as much as any other culprit. Even possessed me wouldn't be an idiot. [THIS ISN'T EXACTLY INSPIRING, MARINETTE]

We separated to cover more ground. I do it with Adrien every time we patrol - we try to check in with each other every half an hour. So it was around that.
antagonize: (060)

[personal profile] antagonize 2016-08-07 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You and Adrien keep saying it's impossible, but I should remind you everyone is guilty in this circus until proven otherwise. I don't believe you did it for what it's worth, but you can get a lot done in half an hour.
missmaladroite: (I believe in miracles)

[personal profile] missmaladroite 2016-08-07 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay, he's got a point. She sighs]

I know. I've been thinking about it. But the reason we do patrols like we do is so we don't lose track of each other for too long. If I had gone down, I'd have had to get past them.

[note she's not elaborating on what she was doing, though]
antagonize: (001)

[personal profile] antagonize 2016-08-07 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Alright. So assuming you didn't go down, what were you doing during that half hour? And don't say "patrolling". I'll noogie you again.
