So he wraps his arms around her in return, giving her a hug back if only because he thinks that she needs one too. This can't be easy for her.]

[ there are definitely tears that prick at her eyes, but she refuses to let them fall. it's bad enough that an innocent person is dying, but she's almost forgotten about what it was like to lose someone she could call a friend. ]

I will be. But no matter what you say, you can't convince me that you deserve this.

[ her hug gets a little tighter, but only momentarily. her voice is only at a whisper, their comments only shared between them. ]

I'd take your place in a heartbeat. [ a pause. ] I've done it before.

[At that, he shakes his head firmly and pulls back from the hug, pinning her with a stern gaze.]

Absolutely not.

I've outlived my given life span exponentially. If nothing else, I find it remarkable that nothing has managed to end it earlier.

[ sorry, frank. she's shaking her head, because what she's been thinking of for the past six weeks has now never been clearer. ]

I'll die for anyone here - I'd die for everyone if it meant saving them. I chose that fate for myself a long time ago - way before being brought here.

[ a hand raises up to cover one of his. she smiles, but it's small and melancholic. ]

I don't think Alice will give me the chance, so don't worry.

With his free hand, he's absolutely going to pinch her cheek, his expression turning sharper.]

And what do you suppose that will fix?

Do you think that would become a glorious story? Are you so interested in self-sacrifice?

No way. I don't care about that - I just want people to be safe. To be able to live on.

[ she was smiling, but now it sinks. ]

If it meant that no one else would have to die, I'd do it over and over again. I won't apologize for that.

[That much manages to get him to pull his hand away, his brow furrowing.]

That's not what that means.

That would mean that you would still meet your end - and while I understand the numbers involved, you surely can't think that's the best possible solution.

All of the motives that they're giving us here... none of them matter to me, since I'm dead already. I'm grateful that I was given some kind of an extension by being with everyone else here, but my fate is still the same. If I'm going to die once and for all, I'll do it in a way that can help others if I have the chance.
