WEEK 5 - Trial

the pygmalion. . .

ONLINE

CAPTAIN'S LOG:
WEEK (5)

saturday TRIAL DAY ONE

(32) survivors

At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort.

The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up.

The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body.

To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it.

Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

Here's a thought. Who was in the gym or the pool area in the morning, besides our suspects?

Doesn't the timing seem suspect? We have Hancock swimming in the pool for nearly all of the time the crime could have taken place. But for the rest of the time, the gym also wasn't empty; it might have been difficult for the killer to escape.

Furthermore, Bull said he noticed the weights missing when he reached the gym at about 8:15. So they either were stolen before Hancock's swim, or in that fifteen minute window. Yes?

True, which raises an idea - was the thief our killer, or was it Miss Carta herself who planned on the drowning?

[never eliminate the idea of someone pulling a reversal of fortune, or something.]
tevinteriscoming: (serious. 8)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-07-10 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't thought of that. It's possible, but once again I wonder how, if Miss Carta planned this, it went so wrong for her.
erythristic: (use.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
She may have greatly underestimated her opponent. But a death by drowning might be sufficiently drawn out for someone who already revealed herself to enjoy torture. There would be no satisfaction gained from something so quick as a single gunshot.

[she totally doesn't say this because she understands the thrill of torture. no. no way. look at her, she's too proper for this.]
tevinteriscoming: (warm. 3)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-07-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
No satisfaction save the security of a simple kill. But it seems profoundly foolish to kill using one's own gun.

What was Carta's item? Do we know?
erythristic: (quiet.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
[a flip of a page back in her notebook! she started this trial's pages a little while back.]

Her handgun. As you said, it would be foolish to kill with one's own gun - it makes it that much harder to get away with the crime.
tevinteriscoming: (thoughtful.)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-07-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
No, no, not the item she came here with. The one they tried to promise her.

We can't know what it is, but at least perhaps we can get a little window into her motivations.
erythristic: (steady.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, that one? Well, I don't think I'd know it at first glance, but I can tell you that she wouldn't have wanted that one.

[where she points with her pen is at a rather sturdy looking black leather binder. the because it's mine is in her tone, if not spoken.]

Unless someone comes up with a better and quicker idea, we'll have to go by process of elimination to deduce hers.

[personal profile] thatbites 2016-07-10 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
The gun used was all hers too, right?

[Because if it was possibly a reversal, well, that helps.]
erythristic: (dream.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's the assumption most of us are going with. The only other person who had a handgun listed in their items was Miss Maria, and...

[yeah. she's not coming back to shoot anyone.]

Anyway. It's the simplest answer to that question. And if she was wearing it, it could be grabbed away in close quarters.

[personal profile] thatbites 2016-07-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think we all learned out lesson after the robot. [seriously, that sure was a case] Simpler is the way to go. So, we should assume the suspect is whoever this Carta chick would actually target. I doubt that would be Bull.
erythristic: (careful.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt any of us would target Iron Bull.

[i mean. just look at him. he could sit on you and kill you in the right way.]

Unless someone goes in wanting to fail. But none of us strike me as the suicidal type.

[personal profile] thatbites 2016-07-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Totally. And he could totally lift heavier weights than that, hell, he could have just lugged the body off somewhere if he actually did it. None of this pool nonsense would have even happened.

[Bull is innocent, spread the word.]
erythristic: (sigh.)

[personal profile] erythristic 2016-07-10 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
He wouldn't need a gun to do it either. By logic alone, that already narrows the suspect list.

[#bulldefensesquad]

So, who would need to put the body in the pool?

[personal profile] antietam 2016-07-10 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think that would explain why the killer didn't target someone from the vulnerable list. It was just chance that they managed to turn the tables.
douchemag: (whatever)

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-07-10 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, we're wondering if the dead person's the one who attacked first again? I swear, we do this every trial and it's never been true.
antietam: (pic#10332796)

[personal profile] antietam 2016-07-10 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, it is kind of suspicious that she would be at the pool with her handgun? I don't think we should write it off immediately.
douchemag: (bored)

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-07-10 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
On a Friday? I think it'd be more suspicious if people weren't walking around armed with whatever weapon they had.
antietam: (pic#10376473)

[personal profile] antietam 2016-07-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's true. So do you think she was targeted just because she was there? It was a chance sort of thing?
douchemag: (side=eye)

[personal profile] douchemag 2016-07-10 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
If that's the case, then we either have one super desperate killer or one super cocky one. Why bother attacking someone armed when you can just target the next sucker that walks in instead?

monsieurchatastrophe: (and so I'll read a book)

[personal profile] monsieurchatastrophe 2016-07-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
But if she had her gun and was planning to kill someone, wouldn't it be unlikely for anyone to get the upper hand before she could kill them? And the only bruises on her were from the pool net...

[was she planning on hitting them with the net too. did they wrestle the net away from her. is this the most ridic of murders]
tevinteriscoming: (concerned. 2)

[personal profile] tevinteriscoming 2016-07-10 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I also find it odd that she would go with her own gun if she planned on killing. She can't use it, it would be immediately obvious she was the culprit.
monsieurchatastrophe: (should I?)

[personal profile] monsieurchatastrophe 2016-07-10 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
No one else has a handgun either, right? I know Machias had [...had] his shotgun but I'm not sure for anyone else.

None of our suspects are vulnerable as well. So whoever was going for it was confident enough that they could get by with no assistance from our lady overseer's list.

[she nods, and writes that down.]

Chance is so often an element in these scenarios, isn't it?
