saturday TRIAL DAY ONE (34) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

So I took a look at the shotgun wound Allen has. It's not perfect, because Machias has a magic gun or some shit, but it looks like the wound was made at long distance as opposed to point blank.

Meaning the killer sneak attacked Allen, as opposed to accompanying him to the garden. From that distance, I think it's safe to say they wanted to do a headshot as opposed to just shoulder wounding. Allen's arm must have activated when he got shot, but the killer was able to fend him off and then smack Allen in the head with the shovel.

Anyway, Machias was probably attacked then before Allen in order to acquire the gun. According to the shitty AI, the killer must have attacked Machias intending to kill him to get the cloaking device.

Gonna guess cloaking device. If that thing can just be used repeatedly, unlike our shitty fucking detective kit tools.

It's a thing you can just keep using as far as I could tell? I mean. Pointless as fuck if not. You just have to turn it on and clip it on. But yeah, we have to assume the cloaking device was received after Machias got fuckin' wrecked anyway. Or...planned to be wrecked. Whatever.

As long as they intended to kill Machias, they would have gotten it. If they didn't follow through on that, they would be punished. I think the overdose must have been pretty late into their scheme though - it doesn't take long to get fucked up if you take too much. Machias would be dead if he wasn't found right away in the early hours.

Basically the only person we know DIDN'T get the cloaking device would be Machias himself since he. Hasn't been punished. So he didn't intend to kill Lavi and win the device.

Which rules him out as a suspect. That's one.

I'm leaning to rule Shelley out too. She's the only one the footprints couldn't match, and it seems to me she's only on the suspect list because she was in the holding cell right when Machias was put there.

I already ruled Shells out, she seems to be failing to meet any of our suspect criteria.

So, it's not possible for Machias to have gotten it to, say, kill Lavi but then Lavi-- or Allen end up poisoning Machias, while Lavi ends up beating Allen to death or whatever? Not that I think that happened, just saying words aloud.

Only if punishments are given out like...after murder trials and not at the start? You can ask when the person would've been punished for not injuring a target effectively or whatevs.

Well, you were punished mid-trial when you were falsely accused of evidence stealing, so it'd... probs be the same? I just didn't catch that bit since I'm a dumbass.

Nah there's like a ton of shit goin' on so I don't blame you for not catchin' it.

I don't think so. According to the AI, the culprit would be punished if they didn't carry out some fatal attempt on the person's life. The person could survive, but an attempt must have been made on them.

So unless Lavi remembers Allen heroically dashing in to save his life, I don't think he was involved.

Wait, which uninvolved "he" do you mean? Maybe Roxy's got a point, and the three of them all had a part.

Look at it this way - the only way to get the cloaking device and not be punished is to attempt to murder a select vulnerable. The attempt could fail, but it has to be a lethal attempt on their lives that could kill them.

It could be Lavi was involved, but the only way to get the device was to intend to murder Machias. So let's propose this - Machias kills Allen, but then Lavi finds out and drugs Machias. Why wouldn't Lavi just admit this right now? He didn't kill Machias in the end, so he isn't considered the culprit.
