Because... there are almost an infinite amount of realities and possibilities in each world?

[ There's a pause. ] But you could still get us back to ours, right? And... even two people who aren't from the same world could go back to one?

Bingo. Every dimension spirals off into billions and billions of alternate universes based on an infinite number of possibilities. Most of the differences between timelines and realities are too imperceptible to tell, but for some...a decision here, a butterfly flaps its wings there, and suddenly everything changes.

And for everyone on this ship...well, it might be easier just to show you. Take a look at your datapad. I've unlocked some of my notes about your worlds.

[ Adam reads them all through carefully, waiting for the moment he might see his own world but... no, these seem to be for the dead. ]

... Is this the extent? I mean, are these the only people whose worlds have ended up like this? They can still go to other places that aren't destroyed, right?

Those are the only ones I currently have access to. But every one of your worlds is in more or less the same condition.

The Cradle Project was about preserving humanity...and so we selected and uploaded those we found in the same conditions as our own world. Those from universes who, for one reason or another, have lost at least 99% of human or sentient life.

[ There's a long pause. ]

Then you can send us to a similar but different enough reality in our worlds. Something that's close enough but manages to avoid whatever happened that lost sentient life.

It's not that easy. The ship can't physically enter other realities - we can only upload brain scans we pick up from them. Not to mention that no matter how similar it might be, it's still a different universe - with its own version of yourself. Are you going to kill them and take their place?

Sure, if that's the only way. [ He sure answered that quickly. ]

Wait, are you saying we're just brain scans? And there's no way for us to ever see any version of home again—for real and not just in a cradle?

Ha! A man after my own heart, Adam.

We never physically brought you onto the ship, no. We created bodies for you, much like you've seen the other bodies in the electric sheep room, and uploaded your brain scans into them. As for that...I don't have the power to do so, but perhaps you and your friends can come up with a way. You certainly have an interesting collection of abilities and skills among you lot.
