saturday TRIAL DAY ONE (13) survivors At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote.

Why, exactly, are we having a trial at all? Fiona, Machias and I killed the shit out of the alien parading around in Rhys's body, and we sure as hell didn't get shoved into the death row for it. So what gives?

I suppose you might say Rhys was already dead by that point. But the fact that he was on the vulnerable list rather mitigates against.

If an exception was made for alien hunters before, can't it be done now? That--that thing, inside of Fiona was definitely not human.

[he knows it's kind of rude to ask that of Dorian, but he's the one who knows the details for Bull best, so.]

[It's not rude. It's a good idea. He smiles at Adrien.]

You're right. I'll give it a try.

Being on the vulnerable list is what let us request a special tool to kill him. If killing one of the souvlaki counts as a conspiracy kill, then the three of us should've been dead meat weeks ago. This isn't consistent with that.

Alice's rules are inconsistent. That's hardly new. I'd argue it with her directly, but I doubt you'll get anywhere.

[And since he's curious, he'll just add.]

Did you really believe if a souvlaki died after your test yesterday, it wouldn't count as a kill?

Killing a souvlaki wasn't part of the original plan, y'know. We were aiming to subdue it, not stab it to death.

The best laid plans, as they say. [A little edge of sarcasm to that, but he's mostly keeping a lid on it.] That's not the question. The question is whether you were under the impression that if one did die, it wouldn't count as a kill.

Dunno. But does it matter? It's not like I have one of those fancy alien slaying roles. Maybe you should perform a seance and ask your dead boyfriend what he thought before he killed Arumat.

I don't need to. He knew it would count, and that if he made a mistake, he'd pay the price for his actions.

[He says it lightly, though, as though it didn't occur to him that was meant to be a cutting remark.]

It matters, but I suppose it doesn't matter anymore.

She was already dead when I got to her.

Not talking about you. But maybe I should be clearer. Make it impaled to death.

[Also, that arm. Uh. He takes a moment to gesture at it.]

Oh. Sorry. [ stabbing is her thing ok ]

But Judar didn't do anything wrong, either. It's not fair, Jason.

[ ...no yuno you did, in fact, do wrong. but her line of vision shifts to her arm, then. ]

Um. I cleaned it up. It's fine. I washed it for twenty minutes... [ proooobably won't get infected? ]

I know. If anything, he's a war hero. But logic apparently goes against Alice's programming.

[Yuno did a lot of things wrong...!! But he's kind of partially blaming himself for this mess, honestly. He went along with Luke's grand scheme despite the possible risks.

To late to get a re-do, though.]

Rinsing it for twenty minutes should have gotten rid of the chemicals. Good job. [... It ppppprobably won't??] Just stick some gauze on it when you can. It'll help protect the burn while it heals.

There's also the rule that allows "public murder".

Looking over the rules, I think that may only refer to public murders that take place immediately after the trial, before the motive is announced.

Does an alien possessing Fiona really count as a participant, anyway? That thing isn't part of our 'Cradle Project', the AI said so herself.

It doesn't matter whether we thinks it counts. It matters that Alice thinks so. We can try to get through to her, but I suspect we'll be forced to end someone's life today.

I know. [she glances at the hologram] Everything hinges on her, she's the one deciding the 'rules' and keeping the trials going....

I'm not entirely sure it does hinge on her. I asked about Adrien's thought, that the alien hunter roles are granted a reprieve if they kill a souvlaki. She told me it wouldn't be within her programming to give the same consideration to Judar. Someone else is pulling Alice's strings, I imagine.

Her captain is dead, isn't she? Could she still be giving orders from... wherever the dead are, now?

There was. But it looks like it doesn't count as "public" unless it's after a conspiracy kill has been carried out. Kind of makes the wording contradictory, doesn't it?

This entire game is stupid. [She sounds tired rather than angry] But the Souvlaki doesn't count as being part of a game-- the AI said so itself. Whatever that thing was--- even if it wasn't the same as the other aliens -- it had to have been from the Souvlaki.

Looks like, as long as it means getting a trial in during the week? She doesn't care about bending the rules or making shit up on the fly.
