WEEK 9 - Trial
the pygmalion. . . ONLINE ![]() CAPTAIN'S LOG: WEEK (9) |
saturday TRIAL DAY ONE (19) survivors ![]() At 9 AM, a klaxon alarm begins blaring in every area of the ship. The alarm will continue to go off until everyone has gathered in the conference room. Should anyone be running late or avoiding the trial for whatever reason, a robot guide will appear wherever they are and gently but firmly escort them into the room. Once all the living players are present, the conference room doors will lock shut; anyone who wishes to leave for whatever reason will need to ask AL-2955 or one of the robots. Anyone leaving for non-investigative purposes, such as bathroom breaks, will be accompanied by a robot escort. The large round table in the center of the conference room has been set up to help the trial run as smoothly as possible. Three holographic screens hover above the center hollow of the table, visible from every angle. The first screen displays the pictures and profiles of the suspects and victim; the second displays the autopsy report; the third displays a blank word processor. Each of the chairs comes equipped with a virtual keyboard which can be used to type information directly into the third screen, such as theories and updated information; they can also be set into privacy mode, which will transfer whatever notes someone writes directly into their datapad instead of on screen. There's also a tablet function for those who wish to draw charts or pictures on screen. The keyboards will detect the DNA of whoever's using them and record who's typed what - simply press an area of text and the name of whoever wrote it will pop up. The area to the right of the table has been temporarily sectioned off with a glass partition and sliding door for hygienic issues. Inside, the victim's body has been laid out on a metal autopsy table, covered by a plastic sheet. Above it is a holographic screen that displays a close-up color photograph of the body when it was found. A hand sanitizer dispenser has been considerately attached to the wall nearby for anyone getting up close and personal to the body. To the left of the conference table is a display case. Any evidence found during the investigation will be carefully collected by the robots at some point the previous day and placed here before the trial starts. Beneath each piece of evidence is a small tablet where players can type up information, such as a short description or where it was found. There are also empty areas left over for any evidence that may be found during the trial. The shelf at the very bottom of the case has been reserved for an extra rulebook in case anyone needs it. Food will be served throughout the day by the robots, who will take individual orders whenever you're feeling hungry. The trial will end at 9:00 PM, at which point all players will have been expected to cast their vote. |

One of us is valued this week. [A shrug.] I think I can take my chances since we're not actually dealing with floating Machias-guts and beer today. You know how to turn off the console when we're ready?
no subject
[He shrugs and settles down near the console, looking at the controls. Once he's more or less located each button, he'll nod at Luke.]
Yeah. Just stick the mine in the center of the scorchmark and holler at me when you're done. I'd rather be as far away from that shit before you hit anything on your datapad.
[He'll turn on the zero-g whenever Luke is ready, of course.]
no subject
Here. Beam me up or whatever, I'll stick it on the ceiling, and then you are hitting the datapad and getting out of the room.

Uh... No. How about I don't and say I did? Dunno about you, but I'm not exactly eager to make some extra meaty salsa. Or — y'know, murder you.
no subject
Look. Two of our suspects are valued, you're right. I didn't think of that. But it's probably not a surprise that the two girls that're valued are also clever. We can't rule it out as a possibility. I'll be fine.
[...he hopes. He actually isn't sure but uh...he's valued. It'll be fine, right?]

[To his credit, Jason looks a teeny bit upset at the prospect of blowing Luke up. Luke is pretty cool as far as questionable murder acquaintances go. Ugh. One of his fingers is hovering over the dial that turns on the zero-g, but...]
We have several mines, right? How about we try with the dummy first, and then if you're that determined to die... I'll let you screw yourself over.
no subject
Of course, Jason makes sense. And he nods slowly anyway.]
...fine. Test the dummy first and then we're doing it my way. [There's no room for argument and he looks at the scarf and the dummy.] How do we wanna set this one up first? You remember the scene better than me since you walked in on it while I was next door.
no subject
[He's going to regret this, but. Whatever. If Luke is determined to get blown up into itty bitty chunks, then Jason can't stop him. All he can do is delay and hope seeing the dummy blown sky high is enough of a deterrent.]
Put the mine where I told you, then kick off one of the walls and try to grab onto the scarf. We'll get out, activate the mine, throw in the dummy, and shut the door as quickly as we can. [A beat.] If we had another dummy, we could try tying it to the scarf to see what happens... But I don't suppose Alice would be that hospitable, right?
no subject
So...first scenario. This is harder than I thought. [But okay, let's work with that.]

Getting from the machine and console to the entrance without turning the gravity off first will be more difficult - Jason may need to reach in and grab Luke's hand to make sure he doesn't go floating upwards again and have to start over.
Once they're out of the room and activate the mine, it'll take about three minutes before they hear the familiar thundering boom of the explosion going off. It sounds identical to the first explosion they heard, and Jessie will be able to feel the floors tremble from upstairs. About half a minute later, a second sharper explosion can also be heard, again identical to the second one from yesterday.
Once they come back in, they'll see the dummy parts floating in a similar fashion to the chunky salsa yesterday. The shoulder has been completely decimated similarly to Machias' as well. There's also another crater and massive scorchmark on the ceiling.]

Once the second explosion is heard, Jason waits another couple of seconds just to be safe and then opens the door. This time with a firmer grip, so he doesn't get dragged into the zero gravity zone.]
... Alright. So that accounts for both of the sounds we heard. Want to tie the second dummy up and see if it winds up like the first one?
[Also, ew. Dummy parts.]
no subject
The scarf had a lot of blood on it. That's the one reason I gotta wonder if he was tied up somehow. It'd make sense, right? [Lalala, taping the second mine, etc, shotgun shells are taped to the shoulder and the dummy's tied up to the scarf and left floating like a nice Cartallen balloon. He uses the handholds on the wall to get himself down, using Jason as leverage again to get himself out of the room as they shut the door.]
Fire two.

[He's still holding onto the door, staring up at all the dummy bits floating above and then at the scarf flapping upwards as before. There's only one test left, and... he's not exactly happy about it.]
Are you sure you wanna do this? If you die, it'll be your blood on my hands. I don't think the group upstairs is going to be very forgiving.
[Playing it up like he's worried about his own skin, but. No. He's pretty worried about Luke, too. He'll glance at the door handle instead of looking at him. He doesn't like this at all.]
... If you survive, open the door yourself. There was blood on the handle— on the inside. I don't think Machias blowing the hell up would have splattered blood all the way down here with the gravity turned off.
no subject
There was blood on the console and blood on the door. That's what I've gotta consider. [He's looking at the scarf flapping around on its own.] If this doesn't work the way I think it will, then just tell everybody it was my idea. Nobody thinks I'm smart enough for self-preservation anyway. [There's a sharp grin.] But I'm gonna be pissed if we don't test this and this would answer a few questions we could use answered. I'll hold onto the scarf and the console to make sure I don't float away myself. If I survive, I'll open the door.
[And here we go again mounting the last mine up on the ceiling with tape. Once its secure, he's grabbing the scarf and also a third dummy they've procured magically. He's gripping onto the scarf and holding onto the dummy so that they're both sort of floating.] Adam said there was more blood in the middle of the scarf than the end that would have been tied to Machias. If our killer tied Machias to it, they'd have to wait half an hour. I think they might've used his scarf to make sure they didn't float, too, and then let him free-float and kill him. The scarf could be stretched from holding onto it and...there's the blood. [He's holding onto the dummy just long enough before he lets it go to float in the room again. He's wrapped around the scarf to stay close enough to the ground.]
Ready when you are.
no subject
No, he's fine. The room's tall enough that most of the explosion's contained on the ceiling, and the gravity prevents the shrapnel from even coming close to him. He'll get buffeted around a little by the resulting blast, but its not really something that would affect him that much even without his immunity. It's definitely not enough to cause any sort of bleeding wound on someone hanging on to the scarf. The only injury he'll get from this is his ears will ring painfully, but it looks like the immunity prevented them from bursting.]

He waits for Luke after the explosion goes off, arms crossed and looking decidedly not nervous. Except that's a joke, because his nerves are thoroughly shot and he may or may not be contemplating opening the door himself to verify if there's any Luke salsa floating around. Thankfully, Luke emerges relatively unharmed so he doesn't have to actually show he cares. Phew.]
Alright. Was that a good enough an explosion for you? No more recklessly endangering yourself like an asshole? [Please say yes.] I'm gonna assume you were paying attention and saw why the mine makes double the boom, by the way.
[He's curious, okay.]
no subject
Second explosion came from the shotgun shells in Machias's shoulder. [He brings a hand up to his head, closing his eyes.] The one problem I've got is that it doesn't explain the scarf...but you said Machias's gun smelled like it was fired, right? Is it possible that somebody else besides Minako was shot and that explains the blood? [Ugh.] No, wait. He had to have been unconscious or there'd be no time to secure the mine unless they did it before, knocked him out--[His head's spinning.] The bruise in the middle of his back. How big was it? [He glances at the console.] Machias probably shot Minako, fine. But then what happened to Machias? Maybe the scarf was a tourniquet or something and that's why there's only blood in the middle, but that doesn't explain why it was tied up to the machine. Any ideas on that? [He's staring at the door again.] Maybe our killer was also shot and it bounced off of them.
no subject
Yeah, it smelled kinda like smoke. Not enough that I would say it was fired within the last ten minutes, but it was definitely fired recently. There's no doubt about that. [He's answering slowly, making sure his words are clear. Just because he's kind of peeved at Luke making him feel actual concern, it doesn't mean he's going to make this worse on purpose.] The bruise was pretty damn big, though. Not enough to cover his whole back. No broken skin, either. But darker towards the center. No idea what could have caused it, but it didn't look like the explosion did it.
[He's following Luke's gaze to the door, mulling over all these questions.]
... We don't know if Minako and Machias were conscious when they were killed. Machias could have been knocked out, and his gun could have been used to attack Minako. Or maybe Machias walked in on something he shouldn't have, decided to fire at our killer — and if they were immune... [He's pausing, not liking where this is going.] But we don't have any way to prove that unless we shoot you or try to blow you up again. People are saying one of them attacked the other, but we also don't know if there was a fight at all. It wouldn't be the first we're led to believe there was a struggle where the was none.
no subject
Minako's hand looks like it was shot completely through, so that could explain that. I could buy that Machias walked in on something he shouldn't have, again--[Let's not forget Lavi and Allen]--and tried to kill our killer, got himself knocked unconscious, the gun was taken to finish off Minako. [It gets completely out of hand to think about.]
...if a mine didn't destroy me from down here, we could test the shotgun theory. I just don't get the scarf thing unless Machias was wearing it, got his head blown off, and then our killer used it to make it look like a scene was planted when it's pretty irrelevant. [He frowns.] We don't have a gun right now, but we've got one more mine. And you're right, we need to test how far the immunity will go. That'll answer a lot of other questions, too.
One more try? [Let's just set up that fourth mine and then he'll sort of float next to it...RIP Luke. Take care of the kids, Jason.]
no subject
Okay no, he's fine. The immunity activates, forming a kind of futuristic shield around him. He won't even feel the heat from the explosion. He'll still get blown backwards by the blast though and hit the wall hard; the immunity's enough to protect him from serious or fatal damage, such as a concussion or a broken spine, and even negates most of the pain. That said, he'll probably feel pretty sore for the next couple of days.]
