MOTIVE

[ Around noon on Monday morning, AL-2955's disembodied voice echoes throughout the ship, calm and smooth as usual. ]

Good morning, travelers. I trust you all thirty-three of you are well. I am here to announce this week's motive.

[ There is a small pause, as if she must take a moment to clear her throat before continuing. ]

In Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Notes from Underground, the unnamed narrator states that "man is a fickle and disreputable creature and perhaps, like a chess-player, is interested in the process of attaining his goal rather than the goal itself." Cited as one of the world's earliest existential works, it calls into question why we so choose to live and work — The unnamed narrator, as nihilistic as he is, so chooses to exist for such sublime and beautiful moments, ranging from the high of engaging with a sex worker to the low of being forcibly thrown out of a bar. He seeks fulfillment in moments, whether they be grotesque or divine. He admonishes those who behave much like he does, but more subtly, and for a different mode of operation — materialists, those who seek money and possessions as their driving force. Where is it that we find ourselves satisfied with what we have?

That is what I am interested in this week. If you so choose to look in the conference room, you will see several cases of tempered glass, all housing an item quite important to you. This item is not necessarily specific, no — it could be several things that make up one idea, such as dollar bills or drugs. If you kill this week, you will be graced with this item. If you or no one chooses not to kill, this item will be destroyed forever.

Have a nice day, travelers.
